(HealthCastle.com) Salsa is a staple at open houses, parties of any kind, and for me, one of the best things to top eggs with. The first time I had authentic salsa was in Mexico, of course. I remember the waiter bringing a bowl of tortilla chips and salsa to the table but not recognizing what was placed in front of me. A bowl of chopped tomatoes, onions, and jalapeno peppers; a far cry from most jarred salsas that look more like lumpy spaghetti sauce with onion and chili flavour. The next best thing to making your own is Herdez Salsa by Hormel Foods
Hormel Foods use the finest fresh ingredients to create authentic salsa with ingredients like tomatoes, onions, salt, chili peppers (Serrano and/or Jalapeno), cilantro, pectin, and citric acid for their Casera Medium version for example.
The ingredients in Herdez Salsa are not only fresh, but also simple, essentially nothing more than what you’d use at home save a little pectin as a thickening agent and citric acid, which serves to act both as a preservative and to add a little acidity.
What I love about salsa is that it makes a simple pairing to lots of different foods. It can be used as a topping for eggs whether they’re fried, scrambled, or poached. It also makes a great omelet filling. Salsa goes great on top of fish or chicken, either warm or cold. Use as a topping for burgers, roast beef or meatloaf. Try replacing the tomato sauce for homemade pizza or use salsa as a sandwich filling: pitas and wraps work best.
Make no mistake, Herdez salsa still counts as a vegetable serving too. There are loads of protective phytonutrients, plant compounds that have demonstrated health benefits and this salsa delivers the goodness of tomatoes, onions and chili peppers. One vegetable serving is a mere one-half cup.
You can buy Herdez Sala at any major grocery store. Alternatively you can make your own from scratch if you want the freshest salsa possible.
Take it or leave it: I love this salsa and could never go back to those other soupy/saucy brands
